The Strategic Pivot – 2024 VC in Review

Venture Capital in 2024

How 2024 Stabilized the Future

By 2024, the “panic” of the correction had subsided, replaced by strategic pragmatism. Global investment edged back up to $368 billion, but the distribution of that capital changed forever. This was the year “Deep Tech” and “Sovereign Tech” moved from the periphery to the core of the European investment thesis.

1. Europe Surpasses Asia (The Q4 Milestone)

A historic shift occurred in late 2024: for the first time, European VC investment ($15.6B in Q4) surpassed the Asia-Pacific region. Investors began viewing Europe—and especially the Nordics—as a stable, high-talent, lower-valuation alternative to the overheating US AI market.

2. The AI Industrialization

2024 was the year AI stopped being a “cool demo” and started being an “enterprise backbone.” Mega-rounds returned, but they were concentrated in heavy-hitters: Databricks ($10B), OpenAI ($6.6B), and xAI ($6B). In Europe, Germany’s Helsing ($484M) proved that Defense Tech was no longer a “taboo” sector for institutional capital.

3. Finland’s “Exit of the Year”: Silo AI

The defining moment for the Finnish ecosystem in 2024 was the $665 million acquisition of Silo AI by AMD. It was a massive validation of Finnish AI expertise and provided much-needed liquidity to the local angel and VC community. Total Finnish funding stayed steady at around €881 million, but the “quality over quantity” trend was clear: angel investors put in record amounts (€31.5M) but into 50% fewer companies.

4. The Return of Health Tech

While CleanTech saw a temporary dip as investors prioritized shorter-term profitability, Health Tech reclaimed its crown as Europe’s most-funded sector. This set the stage for the massive Oura rounds we would witness in the following year.

5. The Bankruptcy Peak

It wasn’t all sunshine; 2024 also saw a 5% increase in Finnish bankruptcies. The “bridge rounds to nowhere” finally ran out, clearing the forest floor for the new generation of leaner, AI-native startups that would define our current 2026 landscape.
